Thankful Thursday: How The Winnipeg Foundation Helps Share the Folk Fest Experience
We are 55 days away from the best weekend of summer and we are so excited to share another amazing festival with all of you!
At the heart of the Winnipeg Folk Fest experience is community, one that is celebrated each July. We know that there are a variety of barriers that make it hard for people to attend our festival. That’s why our Guest for a Day program is an incredibly important program for us.
For each of the past six festivals, we have hosted over 500 attendees from non-profit community organizations to come and take in the sights, smells and – most importantly – sounds of the festival. Through the Guest for a Day program, we provide guests with free tickets, transportation, food and a guided tour of the festival.
We are so excited to be able to host another 500 participants this year thanks to the support of The Winnipeg Foundation and all of our supporters for participating once again.
Red River College’s Diversity & Intercultural Services department will be guests at our festival in July. The department’s mandate is to develop intercultural competence and build a learning environment that is inclusive and respectful of diversity. Lauren Konrad is a student integration coordinator and places a high value on the Guest for a Day experience.
“When international students arrive to Winnipeg, it can often be difficult to meet new people and take part in our local culture,” Lauren says. “The Guest for a Day program gives students this exact opportunity. While getting to experience a long-time Winnipeg tradition, students get the opportunity to spend the day together, learning about local and international sounds. Students are also exposed to festival values and get to participate in different workshops and activities during the day. Having so many Winnipeggers in one field is a great way to build connections and students often will leave having met new friends.”
We are thrilled to have more RRC students join us at the festival this summer, thanks to The Winnipeg Foundation’s support. Here's a few shots of last summer's group enjoying the fest!
